The TAPING RECORDER October, 2004 News from & about Taping For The Blind, Inc. www.tapingfortheblind.org CAMPAIGN SUCCESS--Our Fall Listeners Campaign was very successful, exceeding our 2004 budget forecast. Another illustration of the fact that our service is meaningful to our audience and they prove it with their money. Thanks to all who worked to make this campaign a success! CONGRATULATIONS!--On November 30, 2004, the Lighthouse of Houston will celebrate its 65th birthday--sixty-five years of service to the blind and visually impaired of the greater Houston area. Congratulations to Gib DuTerroil, Lighthouse President (and Taping Advisory Director) and the Lighthouse staff for achieving such a milestone of service! AND TAPING, TOO!--Also note that Taping celebrates its thirty-seventh anniversary this month. We continue to serve those with visual, perceptual, and physical disabilities by Turning Sight Into Sound. Our volunteers do great work, and it is a pleasure to go out and brag on you! HP HOUSTON MARATHON--Ginger Gish and Bob Bartlett were at the runners sign-up party in Memorial Park in September, and they signed up a bunch of new runners, as well as many others who were interested in volunteering. We hope you will support our marathon team with your donations for their efforts on January 16, 2005. AIR-HOUSTONWe told you last time about the Taping participation in the Accessibility Internet Rally (AIR-Houston) competition in order to upgrade our website. Four members of the Taping team were at the kickoff for this rally on October 5 held at Rice University and hosted by Michael Garfield, the High Tech Texan. Bob Bartlett, Ginger Gish, Lynn Johnson, and Scott Ward were there and talked about Taping and our plans. It was announced that all teams would have "shadows" from area school districts and our team would have a pair of "shadows" from the LaPorte Independent School District. These youngsters will be present on rally day (October 16) and watch how we put our new website together. It is good training for the kids who are active in the Technology Club at their school, and it is helpful for our design team as the "shadows" sometimes ask very interesting questions. Version 2 of our website will not be available immediately after rally day. We have many details to get accomplished before we go on the air with the new site, but the AIR-Houston program has helped us to focus our energy on the new site. We will go to a new Web host and we believe you will be impressed by the new website. More in the next newsletter!
