The TAPING RECORDER July-August, 2004 News from & about Taping For The Blind, Inc. www.tapingfortheblind.org THANK YOU--Summer is always a big time for family trips and other vacation activities, so let's say "Thanks" to those of you who have stepped up to help Jim Martinez, Radio Manager, by being available to substitute for other HTBR volunteers who are on vacation. We really appreciate your special efforts helping Turn Sight Into Sound! CONGRATULATIONS--We select winners for our "Special Achievement Award" early in the year, so they can be presented at our Volunteer Recognition event. Unfortunately, not everybody is able to attend that event, and in that case we hold off giving the award. Such was a case recently. Thus, at our last quarterly Board of Directors meeting we were pleased to present the "Special Achievement Award" to our Board Treasurer, Ulyesse LeGrange. Ulyesse has transformed the way we keep books from a "Cash Basis" to an "Accrual Basis," making our reports the same as most of the non-profit charities, a very significant step. Further he has been so helpful in automating clerical functions as well as bringing wise counsel to the table; he is an invaluable member of the Executive Committee and Board. There is much more I could say, but let me leave it by saying once again, "Thank you, Ulyesse"! COMING SOON--Our website update committee has been busy working on our website, and there is more coming soon. Through the Local Independent Charities of America, we will soon have a "Give" button that will allow you to make Visa or MasterCard donations to Taping. We want to make it as easy as possible and we really like the sound of this program. So watch for it! "BIG RIVER--Recently the production of "Big River" was presented at the Miller Outdoor Theater featuring deaf actors shadowing the regular actors and signing the words. We had a last-minute request to borrow equipment for doing description of the play for a blind patron who had come in from Austin. We were able to make our equipment available, and we are pleased to report that Ms. Pat Pound, Director of the Governor's Office for People with Disabilities, thoroughly enjoyed the description and the play. While we didn't do the description, this may be another opportunity for us.
