The TAPING RECORDER November, 2003 News from and about Taping For The Blind, Inc. www.tapingfortheblind.org HOLIDAY HOURS--The holidays are almost upon us. Where has this year gone, anyway? We will have revised hours for Thanksgiving Day and the Friday following Thanksgiving (November 27 & 28). Both days the building will be open from 7 to 11 a.m. Normal hours for Saturday and Sunday following Thanksgiving will be observed. We sincerely hope this will not be a great inconvenience to you. We further hope that you and your family have a wonderful holiday! Please let a staff member know as soon as possible if you will not be able to do your HTBR show due to conflicting holiday plans. This will allow us maximum time to find a substitute reader so we can keep the programming coming for our customers. MARATHON COMING--The HP Houston Marathon is not far away and if you are interested in running or walking for Taping, please contact Ginger for details. You can walk on behalf of Taping and raise money benefiting Taping in the process. It is called "Walking/Running for a Reason." If you know someone who is planning to run/walk in the marathon who is not representing a charity, suggest Taping to them. Also keep your eyes peeled for runner pledge forms soon to appear on our bulletin board. Support our runners, and our favorite charitable organization as well! HOLIDAY PARTY--You are cordially invited to join your fellow Taping volunteers at our annual Holiday Party onWednesday, December 10, 2003 from 5 to 7 p.m. at 3935 Essex Lane. Food, fun, and fellowship are in order as we celebrate another terrific year at Taping! GREAT PROGRAM!--Our congratulations to Jim Bratton for his excellent work developing the first in a series of locally produced programs for airing on HTBR. The program title is "Turning Sight Into Sound" and the subject of the first program was Career Day 2003. Career Day is an effort to assist underemployed and unemployed blind people become smarter about looking for a job. The planning committee contains representatives from three advocacy organizations as well as the Texas Commission for the Blind and the Houston Lighthouse for the Blind. This year Career Day was held on October 18, 2003. Planning meetings for this event were held in the Taping conference room. Jim conducted interviews, wired the conference room for sound, listened in on a planning session, and then produced a terrific program about the event. He even captured the sound of a Metro Lift van driving away from Taping! We have a number of other subjects for this show, with show number 2 currently in production. It will highlight the store at the Houston Lighthouse and the many adaptive products available there, just in time for Christmas shopping! Great work, Mr. Bratton!
