The TAPING RECORDER January 2003 No. 3-01 News from and about Taping For The Blind, Inc. www.tapingfortheblind.org OFF AND RUNNING--We are off and running for another year. We hope your holidays were pleasant and that you are now surviving the after-holiday diet. Our Board of Directors has had its first quarterly meeting and they are getting committees formed as well as other housekeeping duties. We are pleased to welcome Randy De La Garza, John Hesse, Barbara McCormick, and Dennis Tompkins as new Directors. We also welcome new Advisory Directors Gib DuTerroil and Denny Scott. We are glad to have all on board. JUST RUNNING--The runners were off before the crack of dawn as the HP Houston Marathon had perfect running weather on Sunday, January 19. It was clear and cold for Houston's largest single-day sporting event, as thousands of runners got after it in a variety of races including marathon, half marathon, 5K, and wheelchair events. The Taping Hoopla Station was set up at the halfway point for the marathon, and it was capably staffed by Bob & Victoria Bartlett, Ginger Gish, Cheermaster Lynn Johnson, Lyndon Joslin, Joan Kats and her grandchildren, and Andrew Stapleton. Bob Bartlett was delighted to get an official Houston Marathon whistle as he felt it would be useful during Board meetings. Lynn Johnson appeared on the KTRK Channel 13 Marathon Special as she can really cheer and they noticed! A very special thanks to those who ran on behalf of Taping and raised money for our organization: Bob Daugherty, Lisa Foronda, Ted Pfister, Anita Simpson, Dena Marks Sokolow, and Gretchen VanBeers. We are proud of each of you and we appreciate your raising funds for Taping. (By the way, if you would like to make a donation honoring one or all of our runners, it is not too late -- just send it in and we'll do the rest!) COMING SOON--We still have seven recording booths to convert to the new digital equipment, and we have a plan to get this part of the project completed. We will need to close the building so our installation crew and staff can get cable run, install equipment in the remaining booths, and update the software for all recording booths. The building will be closed at noon on Friday, February 7, to start the work. We will have normal hours on Saturday, February 8. The building will then be closed at noon on Sunday, February 9, and will close again at noon on Monday, February 10. We do apologize for the inconvenience this may cause in your schedule. Once this work is complete, we will then focus on completing training to finish one of the most significant changes ever to happen at Taping. STAY TUNED--There is much more to tell you about, but we'll cut it off for now.
