The TAPING RECORDER November 15, 2002 No. 2-11-01 News from and about Taping For The Blind, Inc. www.tapingfortheblind.org HOLIDAY RECEPTION--It's hard to believe, but we are about to finish 2002. But be thee of good cheer and plan to attend our Holiday Reception for Taping Volunteers on December 12, 2002 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at 3935 Essex Lane. As a Taping volunteer, you and a guest are invited to join in the holiday celebration with your fellow volunteers (some of the finest people you will ever meet!). HALLOWEEN DREAMS--That is the title of the Halloween special produced for our clients and aired on HTBR on October 31. And what an outstanding job was done by Robert Schuller (host and narrator), as well as Marcie Corder, David Gillmore, Kathy Osman, and Ted Pfister in delivering the thrills and chills. From a youthful coming-of- age story, to a description of youthful pranks involving hard little apples, and Halloween history, this is what they delivered and it was excellent! Jim Martinez and Justin Blount helped with the production, and your editor will offer testimony that it was really well done. Thank you to all involved! WE'RE GETTING THERE--October 28 was our first anniversary of going digital, and Jim Martinez reports that all HTBR readers have been trained on the new recording equipment. Most seem to be enjoying working on a computer. Custom Recording readers will be next in line for training as our digital ship steams along. If things go according to plan, we will install new equipment in the rest of the recording booths in January, completing one of the most significant steps in the history of Taping. VALUABLE INFORMATION--As a general rule, information has value, and certain information may have even higher value, depending on its intended usage. That is why we say "Thank You!" to Mary Pedersen for her dedicated work on the League of Women Voters "Voters Guide." The four hours of information helped our clients to be better informed when they approached the new E-Slate voting system and cast a private and independent vote. Very well done, Mary! CONGRATULATIONS, CHRIS BELL--We offer our hearty congratulations to volunteer and Advisory Director Chris Bell as he won a seat in the House of Representatives for the 25th District of Texas. It is a big job, but we are certain Chris will do it very well! CONGRATULATIONS, SCOTT HOCHBERG--We also congratulate Advisory Director Scott Hochberg on being returned to the Texas House of Representatives from the 132nd District. (Scott has served on the Board of directors, and is a past President of the Board.) REMINDERS ABOUT COMPUTER USAGE--Radio Manager Jim Martinez has asked us to offer these reminders about using the new computer systems: First, please leave the computer on after you have exported your program. The staff will take care of shutting them down in the evening. It is easier on the hardware to leave it on once it has been turned on. In addition, if the computer is on when you enter the booth, there is no need to turn it off and then right back on in order to start your work. If the "Record Screen" is on, all you have to do is to click on your publication or book name found in the FOLDERS menu item at the top of the screen. WELCOME NEW VOLUNTEERS--It is a pleasure to welcome the following new volunteers to our Custom Recording group: Dr. Morton Fefer, David Halliburton, and Stephen M. Fierros. We offer welcome to the following new HTBR readers: Deanna Sullivan, Soledad Seman, Barbara Puente, Peter Tsan, Betty Parker, and Janet Clark. We are very glad to have each of you join our Taping family. FRIENDS CAMPAIGNS--It is the time of year that we roll out our "Friends of the Board" and "Friends of Taping" campaigns. This is an opportunity for you to tell your friends about the good work you do at Taping, and at the same time help us raise a little money for the organization. We have a basic form letter that we suggest, and you are welcome to customize it however you like. Then bring us names and addresses of people you would like to contact and we will prepare the letters and envelopes. All you have to do is come in and sign the letters, as we are believers in personal signatures. This is a great way to tell your friends and associates about the wonderful and worthwhile work you do, and this can help Taping a lot as we have really good success with this personal fund-raising campaign. Contact Ginger and she will get you set up to help! ONE MORE--We plan to have one more edition of the RECORDER this year. The next Board of Directors meeting will be held November 21 and that is usually a good source of stories, plus we want to remind you about our Holiday Reception again. HOLIDAY HOURS--We are not certain what the hours will be for the building during the Thanksgiving holiday, so please check the bulletin board. We will also send out a bulletin on this service to let you know. HAPPY THANKSGIVING--We hope that you have a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday, and we thank you for your good work Turning Sight Into Sound! RLB
