The TAPING RECORDER November 30, 2001 No. 11-01 News from and about Taping For The Blind, Inc. PARTY TIME…The Taping holiday party is Wednesday, December 5, 2001 from 5-7 p.m. at 3935 Essex Lane. Please join us and look at our new paint job, remodeling, and new radio broadcast equipment. We have much to celebrate, particularly our friendship and common bond of being Taping volunteers. DIGITAL CONVERSION – PHASE ONE…The conversion of the Control Room and the Radio Production Room to digital format (as well as one recording booth) is nearing completion. Phase Two will be installing new digital equipment in the rest of the recording booths. That work will proceed as funds are available, with the goal of completing the entire project by the end of 2002. We are scheduled to resume normal operations on HTBR on December 3, 2001. There are many people to thank for their hard work on this project but we will save that for a special issue. We will do this because we are on a short timeline for this issue, and we do not want to leave anybody out – we have had such spectacular effort we will hold off acknowledgments for now. Please note that the building will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on December 1st and 2nd. There will be no Chronicle reading either day as the staff and an engineer from Broadcast Electronics put the finishing touches on Phase One by working their magic bringing the new hardware on-line. WEBSITE…We plan to launch our very own website on December 3, 2001, as well. The site will be hosted by Hal-PC, the Houston Area League of Personal Computer users, and the price is right – they host sites for not-for-profit organizations for free. The site is designed for informing about Taping and our services. We have also designed it for accessibility and ease of use. We are very excited about having a presence on the Web for Taping. The site has been designed and implemented by the FOLP Web Design Team, a dedicated group of Taping volunteers, and we’ll tell you more about them in a later issue, too. The URL will be www.tapingfortheblind.org, but wait for Monday to check it out. HOLIDAY HOURS…December 24 and 25 (Monday and Tuesday), December 31 (Monday) and January 1, 2002 (Tuesday), the building will be open from 7-11 a.m. We hope this doesn’t cause you any inconvenience. FRIENDS OF TAPING…Please consider participating in this campaign and let your friends know what good work you do for this organization, and help us raise money at the same time. Contact Cynthia or Ginger for details. BRIEFLY TOLD…Kandace Shyer reports that she will attend the holiday party with 9- month-old son, Grant, and 3-year-old daughter, Madison. She is looking forward to returning to volunteer service sometime in December…Congratulations to Dena Marks Sokolow for completing the Chicago marathon (running that far never ceases to amaze your editor)…Meredith Wargo (new volunteer) is the new reader for "Smithsonian"…Pat Shannon is the new reader for "Money Matters"…Monica McHam (returning volunteer and former Custom Recording reader) is the new reader for "The Liberal Side"…Jane Zimbaldi (new volunteer) is the new reader for "Teen People"…Ann Liefeste will move to Custom Recording. Welcome to new and returning volunteers. We look forward to your good work! BULLETIN BOARD…If you are too busy to be able to review the bulletin board at Taping, the RECORDER will try to help. The following items are presented for your consideration and, as our lawyers tell us, this does not constitute endorsement or promotion. It is for information dissemination only. Nelda Stoeltje, who's been a dedicated Taping For The Blind volunteer for the last six years, is looking for a new job. Nelda's experience is mainly as a secretary and administrative assistant. She is trained as a paralegal, so is very comfortable working at law firms, but prefers receptionist and mailroom work now. To contact Nelda, call her at 713-278-2713. *** Dr. Harry Sokolow, a family practitioner whose wife, Dena Marks, and mother-in-law, Jo Marks, have been Taping For The Blind volunteers for many years, has just opened a new office very close to Taping, at the intersection of Westheimer and Mid Lane. Mid Lane Family Practice opened on Monday, October 15, at 4100 Westheimer, Suite 148. Sokolow wanted to locate his practice in a central and convenient place, and it appears he found a niche. Dr. Sokolow is on more than 30 different insurance plans, and he has extended hours on some weeknights and weekends by appointment. For more information or to make an appointment, call Mid Lane Family Practice at 713-622-2300. *** The Houston Council of the Blind is offering their beautiful calendars for sale again this year. The calendars feature artwork done by visually impaired student artists. The price is $10.00 with proceeds benefiting the scholarship program for the Council. Call Bob Bartlett (713-645-6370) or Dr. Ed Bradley (713-697-2424) to purchase one of these fully accessible calendars! *** To submit an item for the "Bulletin Board" segment of the RECORDER, send it to Bob at rlb19@.... Again, inclusion of these items is in no way a recommendation by Taping. Happy holidays to you and thanks for another great year of your good work! RLB
